My Favorite Sound

Multicolored fall trees for blog 2011 101_1964-1 - Version 2

Finding undistracted time to hear God speak to my heart takes some work, but it is worth it.  For me, it means that I need to find a place where there are no other competing voices and sounds.  With a house full of media devices and family members up early and up late,  it is not always easy to find a quiet room.  However, what I hear from Him in the silence makes it worth every effort to find a noiseless, solitary place.  Even if it means sitting in my car in a nearby parking lot, in the middle of winter, for an authentic conversation with the One Who understands me the most, loves me unconditionally, and shares His perspective with me.

I know that God can speak to us in the midst of action and chatter, but for me, there is something different about the clarity in the silence.  That is why I love the story of Elijah’s encounter with God in the wilderness.

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”  Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.   After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:11&12 NIV)

God’s gentle whisper is my favorite sound of all.

  1. Hi Tammy, I love your posts. They’re so pretty and comforting. I saw a video on Facebook today of some people just sitting in a living room singing a worship song. It was so simple and purely uplifting. That’s what Christ’s spirit does for us. Love you! – Mary H.
